Where to Go in India During Winter: A Curated Guide for European Visitors

The state of Kerala established itself as a most beautiful tourist destination for visitors to India who consider it to be “God’s Own Country.” Kerala provides visitors an ideal combination of cultural experiences and natural beauty and peaceful beach areas. The state offers visitors houseboat cruises which operate through Alleppey and wildlife tours which occur in Periyar and its historical sites which exist in Cochin thereby creating a perfect environment for travelers who wish to discover destinations at a slow pace.

In February, five Italian travelers started their 7-day Kerala journey which Les Clés de L’Inde created to demonstrate the area’s various cultural elements. This Kerala Travel Guide experience included the historic city of Cochin and Periyar National Park’s wildlife-rich forests and the traditional Alleppey houseboat experience and Marari beach retreat which formed the basis of their travel plans.

The itinerary created a memorable Kerala holiday experience through its combination of cultural activities and wildlife encounters and backwater exploration and beach relaxation.

Arrival in Cochin – Exploring Kerala’s Historic Port City

The journey started in Cochin, the cultural center which stands as one of the most interesting places in Kerala. Cochin displays its colonial architectural style together with its active maritime area which shows the results of centuries of international commerce and cultural interactions.

The travelers in Fort Kochi used the narrow pathways which connected Portuguese-built structures to art galleries and spice storage facilities. The Chinese fishing nets which operate along the coastline create a scenic view which shows the beauty of Kerala’s coastal regions during the time of sunset.

During their city tour, the guests visited key attractions such as:

  • St. Francis Church stands as one of India’s oldest European churches
  • The Dutch Palace at Mattancherry contains ancient murals
  • The vibrant Jewish Quarter along with its synagogue

Cochin offers a perfect combination of traditional values and modern urban life which makes it the best place to start exploring South India.

Into the Wilderness – Periyar National Park

From the coastal city of Cochin, the group traveled inland toward Periyar National Park in Thekkady, one of the most famous wildlife reserves in South India.

Nestled in the lush Western Ghats, Periyar is renowned for its biodiversity and scenic landscapes. The highlight of the visit was a boat safari on Periyar Lake, where travelers can observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

During the safari, the Italian guests spotted several animals along the lake’s shores, including:

  • Wild elephants
  • Sambar deer
  • Exotic bird species

Periyar is also famous for its spice plantations, where cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon are cultivated. The travelers enjoyed a guided walk through a spice garden, learning about Kerala’s rich spice heritage and tasting freshly prepared local flavors.

The peaceful forests and cool mountain air made Periyar a refreshing contrast to the coastal atmosphere of Cochin.

Alleppey – The Magical Kerala Houseboat Experience

The expedition proceeded to Alleppey after the team finished their research of Kerala’s forests. The destination serves as the central point of Kerala’s famous backwater system.

Alleppey which locals call the “Venice of the East” attracts visitors with its system of canals and lagoons and lakes which locals have developed into beautiful landscapes that feature coconut palm trees and rice paddies.

The group embarked on a traditional Kerala houseboat (Kettuvallam) which they used to travel through the backwaters during an overnight journey. The rice barges which originally served as their purpose have been transformed into floating homes which include multiple bedrooms and dining spaces and outside decks which offer beautiful views.

The houseboat ride allowed visitors to see authentic village life which happened along the canals. The viewers observed fishermen who threw nets into the water and saw children who waved from the riverbanks and witnessed local residents who used small wooden boats for transportation.

The houseboat experience reached its peak when the crew prepared authentic Kerala dishes on board their kitchen which included traditional dishes featuring coconut and spices and fresh fish.

The peaceful waters created a beautiful and timeless experience when the evening arrived and the waters reflected the golden light of the sunset.

Marari Beach – Three Days of Pure Relaxation

The backwater experience ended when we reached Marari Beach which serves as a peaceful beach destination that people visit from nearby Alleppey.

Marari beach stands out from tourist beaches because it offers visitors a calm atmosphere which they can enjoy while watching traditional fishing villages and walking on its extensive golden sandy beach.

The group dedicated three days to relaxation at the beach resort while they experienced the peaceful nature of coastal living.

Some of the memorable experiences included:

  • Morning walks along the palm-lined beach
  • Watching local fishermen bring in their daily catch
  • Enjoying fresh seafood and traditional Kerala dishes
  • Relaxing by the sea with Ayurvedic spa treatments

Marari serves as the ideal conclusion for a Kerala trip because it provides travelers with a chance to relax after they discover the area’s artistic and natural wonders.
